Essential tools for your first apartment
A compact kit for furniture, picture hanging and small repairs.
Start with tasks, not a toolbox
A few reliable hand tools are often enough for a first apartment. Think about whether you mostly assemble furniture, hang pictures or make small repairs. A large kit offers little value if most pieces never fit your jobs.
A useful starting kit
A measuring tape of roughly three to five metres, a medium hammer, combination pliers, suitable screwdrivers or bits and a utility knife cover many everyday jobs. Add a small spirit level for shelves and pictures. Wear eye protection when drilling or where chips may fly.
Screws, anchors and walls
Do not assume one anchor works for every wall: match fixings to wall material and load. For unknown walls or heavy loads, check the construction and manufacturer guidance. Consider the possible position of wiring and pipes before drilling; ask a professional if unsure.
What to check when buying
A handle should feel secure; bits and screwdrivers need to fit the screw head closely. Worn or ill-fitting tips can strip screws. Add individual tools when a real need arises rather than buying duplicates.
