Five useful tools for DIY

Five versatile helpers and the jobs they make easier.

1. Measuring tape

Measure before cutting, drilling or ordering. A readable tape with a sturdy blade helps with furniture, curtains and cuts. Measure critical dimensions twice.

2. Spirit level

A spirit level helps align shelves, pictures and cabinets. Check the fixing as well: straight does not automatically mean secure.

3. Screwdriver with matching bits

A compact holder with well-fitting bits covers many common screw heads. The correct bit sits deeply and securely; a loose or undersized tip can damage the head.

4. Combination pliers

Use them to hold, bend and cut thin wire. Ordinary pliers do not make electrical installation work safe; leave such work to qualified people.

5. Compact cordless screwdriver

Frequent furniture assembly may justify a small cordless screwdriver. Borrowing can be better for a single shelf. A compact screwdriver is not a drill/driver; the wall material matters when drilling.
